Biography

Oderlyn Gutiez started studying music  at the age of 8 at Guillermo Tomas Music Conservatory in La Habana, Cuba. She started with the piano as her main instrument, and at the age of 10 started the flute with professor German Fraga but continued studying the piano as her second instrument. While in the conservatory she participated in Music Festivals like the “FESVIEN”  which was an annual wind instrument festival.

 

Oderlyn came to the United States in 1998 continuing her musical education at Kinloch Park Middle School were she received a Certificate of Excellence  for outstanding performance in Band (1999). Since 1999 participated  in the  Band and Orchestra at South Miami Senior High School of the Arts and at the same time acquired experience and improvement through private lessons with Professor  Lillian Santiago-Caballero. During that period she participated in the Florida Band Masters Association's Wind Instrument Solo Evaluation receiving the highest evaluation of Superior for 4 years consecutive. At the same time was selected the last two years in a row after auditioning to play in the Side by Side concerts with the New World Symphony where the students play with the musicians of the orchestra. 

 

 During the high school years some of the music awards received include: Outstanding Achievement in Band Award (2001), Outstanding Softmore (2001). Oderlyn reseived a Certificate of Award for Outstanding Soloist presented by The Unconservatory at the Gala for two Pianos after performing in a flute trio at their concert on October 20, 2001 . Outstanding 11th grade Band (2002), Senior of the Year Award (2003), Outstanding Musicianship Award (2003), Certificate of Award for Choral Performance-Flute (2003) (Award received after playing the flute with the choir of the school at several of their concerts).

 

In 2003 she was accepted into New World School of the Arts College which is an Art School in a partnership with Miami Dade College and University of Florida. During her university studies she participated in different competitions and masterclasses. In January 2005 she was a winner in the Florida Flute Association Advanced Masterclass with Ervin Monroe (Principal Flutist of Detroit Symphony). Received the Honors Day Award from New World School of the Arts (Music Department) in 2005 as well. In March 2005 she won the 2nd place in the Women's History Month Celebration Music Competition at Miami Dade College. In July 2005 she participated at the annual Ramson Wilson's (Professor from Yale University) Flute Masterclasses in Monterchi, Italy. Year 2006 has been a productive one for her as well. After being selected as one of the five finalists for the College Young Artist Competition of the Florida Flute Association, and winning the third place on the second round of this prestigious competition. In May 21, 2006 she did a T.V Appearance with cellist Erick Riesgo in a flute-cello duet in the show “Noche de Estrellas" (Night of Stars) in the Telemiami Channel. In July 2006 she participated in the Louis Moyse (very important flutist and contributor in the field of music) Masterclasses at Montpelier, Vermont culminating in the International Flute Performers Concert with Mr. Moyse conducting (July 22, 2006). In April 26, 2006 Oderlyn received the Bachelor Degree in Music Performance from the University of Florida with highest honors graduating Summa Cum Laube.  On February 2007 and 2008, she performed in the Keith Underwood Masterclass at FIU. She has also  performed in Masterclasses with Renee Siebert (2008) and Eugenia Zukerman (2008).  

 

Currently, Oderlyn attends the Lynn University Conservatory of Music (Boca Raton, Fl) after receiving a full  music scholarship. In Fall 2008, she will be a student of the distinguished flutist Renee Siebert (flutist of the famous New York Philharmonic), at the university. Moreover, she is an active performer and instructor.  Oderlyn is a Flute Instructor at The School of Music and Orchestra (Doral, Fl) since 2005, in  addition to teaching  privately at her studio.  She  performs with the Master Musicians Incorporated since 2005, the Bravo Musicians since 2006 and is the founder of  The Elegant Trio Music Ensemble.  Furthermore, Oderlyn is the principal flutist of the Walenstein Symphony Orchestra and has substituted in orchestras like Sunrise Symphonic Pops Orchestra, Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra and the Hollywood Philharmonic Orchestra and part of the Lynn University Philharmonia Orchestra.
